During the summer, the Ahtna Land Department continues to be busy out in the field. As part of an ongoing monitoring project the Carbon Intern placed 28 beetle traps containing pheromones that attracts the beetles. Monitoring the number of beetles will allow the land department to track the beetle population in the region to better understand if the population size should be considered a threat to the health of Ahtna’s forests.

An Ahtna forestry team consisting of a Natural Resources Technician and Bear Guard are also out in the field analyzing 75 carbon inventory target plots as part of the Carbon Sequestration project. The team takes height and circumference measurements of previously designated and inventoried trees to track growth of the trees over time.
