There are eight villages within the Ahtna region: Cantwell, Cheesh’na (Chistochina), Chitina, Kluti-Kaah (Copper Center), Gakona, Gulkana, Mentasta, and Tazlina; all eight are Federally Recognized Tribes.
The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 created Village Corporations for these eight villages. In 1980, seven of the eight Village Corporations merged with Ahtna, Inc.; Chitina Native Corporation remains an independent corporation. Ahtna and Chitina Native Corporation have entered into a memorandum of understanding to further their mutual interests in the region. Learn more about Chitina Native Corporation.
Each village is unique, but all are connected by the values and traditions of the Ahtna people and culture. Learn more about our villages by using the interactive map below.
