Attu Island FUDS Removal Action

Ahtna provided services to the USACE to remove source and incidental contamination at Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) located on Attu Island. In addition to USACE removal action (RA) work, Ahtna performed a Preliminary Assessment of the United States Coast Guard’s (USCG’s) 1,800-acre Attu property, conducted a limited Remedial Investigation (RI) effort at the LORAN C Station Attu and Small Arms Firing Range-C, and provided LORAN C Station Attu facility hardening and hazardous material removal efforts.
Complete source and incidental contaminant removal actions (RAs) on Attu Island, Alaska for United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The goal of this project is to remove wildlife hazards and characterize any remaining contamination at Containerized/Hazardous, Toxic, and Radioactive Waste project sites within Areas of Interest (AOIs) #1, #4, and #5 on Attu Island. Efforts include the excavation and disposal of drums and drum debris identified within Areas of Interest (AOIs) #1 and #5. Removal, transport, and disposal of lead-acid batteries, paint containers, and associated soil/debris identified within AOIs #4 and #5. Excavation and disposal of petroleum, oil, and lubricants- (POL-) contaminated soil identified within AOIs #1 and #5. Removal, transport, and disposal of transformers, drums of white powder (identified as calcium hypochlorite during previous investigation, and associated soil/debris identified within AOI #5.
