Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve Seeks Candidates for Subsistence Resource Commission

COPPER CENTER, AK – Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve is accepting applications through December 20, 2021, for seats on the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park Subsistence Resource Commission (SRC). The SRC provides a venue for local subsistence users to provide input into the management of subsistence resources in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. It was established under the provisions of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) and charged with recommending a program for subsistence hunting in the park.

The SRC prepares proposals to change federal subsistence regulations and comments on proposals submitted by others that affect Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Members are appointed by the Governor, the Secretary of the Interior, and the three Federal Subsistence Regional Advisory Councils in the Wrangell-St. Elias area. This recruitment is for Secretary of the Interior appointments. The nine-member SRC meets twice a year at various locations surrounding the park. Members are expected to make every effort to attend all meetings.

Commission members serve as unpaid volunteers but may be reimbursed for their travel expenses while away from their homes or regular places of business in the performance of services for the SRC. Initial appointments are typically for three-year terms and may be renewed.

You may apply yourself or nominate someone else. Applications should include a resume with contact information and information about the applicant’s qualifications for serving on the SRC, including involvement in subsistence activities in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and experience with serving on boards, commissions or other organizations. If nominating someone else, please check with them before doing so. Applications should be sent to Barbara Cellarius, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, PO Box 439/Mile 106.8 Richardson Highway, Copper Center AK 99573 or emailed to barbara_cellarius@nps.gov. For additional information about the application process, contact Barbara Cellarius, subsistence coordinator, at (907) 205-0157. Application information is also posted on the park website at:  www.nps.gov/wrst/learn/management/subsistence-resource-commission.htm
